Summer is here! High temperatures pose a risk to everyone, including workers both indoors and outdoors. Employers, it’s important to have procedures in place to protect workers from heat illness. 🌞💧1️⃣ Be Informed: A heat meter can help monitor conditions in the work area. Download the free Heat Index App to be prepared.2️⃣ Ease In: Most serious heat illnesses happen during the first few days of work, before tolerance has been built. Shorter periods of high-intensity work are recommended during this period.3️⃣ Ample Cool Water: Don’t wait until you’re thirsty! Aim for at least 1 cup every 20 minutes.4️⃣ Access to Shade: Workers should have access to a shady or cool location (such as under a canopy or in an air-conditioned work vehicle) to lower body temperature after working in hot conditions.5️⃣ Breaks: Workers need time to recover from the heat. Adjust based on the temperature and humidity.6️⃣ Look Out for Each Other: Keep an eye on your coworkers for signs of heat illness. Check in with them frequently. This week, WYPR posted an article about heat stress and ways that Maryland will require employers to have a written heat safety plan: https://lnkd.in/eyAku6Nd Stay cool and safe! ❄️🕶️ #HeatSafety #StayHydrated #BeatTheHeat

🚨 Today at the Port of Baltimore! 🚨The White House Senior Advisor Tom Perez, Maryland Department of Labor Secretary Portia Wu, and senior members of the Moore Administration convened Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore businesses and workers for a roundtable discussion on the Port’s economic recovery following the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.Perez, who served as both Maryland Secretary of Labor and Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor, has been President Joe Biden's point person on the Port’s reopening. He’s been working closely with state and local officials to deliver much-needed federal aid and resources.“History will look back on this moment as a true testament to federal, state, and local government coming together and serving people,” said Perez. “ In the most dire of times, we can step up. This was a moment for Maryland and the nation at its best.”During the hour-long discussion, Perez and Wu heard from longshoremen, truckers, Port terminal operators, and business owners about their experiences with federal and state relief programs. Among the workers were Scott Cowan, president of the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) Local 333, and members who benefited from the state’s Worker Support Program. This program provides $430 in weekly relief to Port workers earning less than their regular income.Nearly 3,000 workers have benefited from the Worker Support Program, which has distributed $10.6M in payments. Secretary Portia Wu highlighted the importance of coordination between all levels of government with business, labor, and the community. “The swift and coordinated action from federal, state, and local governments got us to where we are today,” said Secretary Portia Wu. “Leaders from the White House and the state heard directly from small businesses and workers about the impact of economic recovery programs and gained valuable insight on how to plan for the future as the Port reopens."Scott Cowan and his union members emphasized the crucial role of state aid in keeping workers financially stable during the Port’s disruption. “Maryland Department of Labor stepped up to the plate for ILA. The Worker Support Program brought assistance to almost every member in their time of need,” said Cowan.Port business owners Dawn Speakman of Drayage Solutions and William Cox of A Triple CCC Logistics shared their positive experiences with the state’s Worker Retention Program, which has provided $17.4M in aid to 284 businesses, protecting over 3,000 jobs.“The Port of Baltimore Worker Retention Program was a game changer in helping keep our team employed during this challenging time,” said Speakman. Cox added: “The funding and access to local funding allowed me to pivot and have flexibility. Through all of this, we were able to sustain our business and provide funds to keep the business afloat.”#PortOfBaltimore #MarylandToughBaltimoreStrong
