As we embark on our learning tour and a visit to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital mortuary near West Terrace Cemetery, as part of the joint South Australia and New South Wales Cemeteries and Crematoria Conference, it's a fitting time to reflect on the fascinating world of mortuary history and its surprising connections. This state-of-the-art mortuary boasts four autopsy suites, increased body storage capacity, and new handling equipment utilised by staff. Notably, it provides a dedicated viewing space for families of the deceased, offering a respectful environment during difficult times. In the midst of these modern facilities, let's turn our attention to a remarkable story from the mid-20th century that transformed the landscape of medical training in an unexpected way. Imagine a time when resuscitation and life-saving techniques were in their infancy. In 1955, a toymaker named Asmund Laerdal had a visionary idea. He sought to create a mannequin for CPR training that would be both functional and realistic, improving the effectiveness of training. What served as his inspiration? It was a plaster cast of the death mask of 'L'Inconnue de la Seine,' an anonymous young woman who had drowned in the River Seine in the 1880s.This unlikely connection between mortuary history and medical education gave rise to the iconic CPR doll known as Resusci Anne. Its lifelike features have played a pivotal role in training people in life-saving techniques, saving countless lives worldwide. The story of the CPR doll beautifully illustrates how the past can influence and shape the future, even in fields we might not expect. Our learning tour promises to unveil further intriguing connections within the world of mortuary practices.BW Gillian 💕#future #cemeteries #crematoria #mortuary #learningtogether #stories #history #innovation #healthcare #cpr #industryleaders #friends #learningtour #communitybuilding

so, in 3 weeks I'll shift back to Matron, having been Head of Nursing for 2 years. Without doubt , it will come with personal challenges..but it's important to realise, that it is not a failure to step back....there will always be many reasons ...both personal and professional for our decisions....and essential that you know you are no less important....., your knowledge and wisdom is no less significant. .., position should not automatically reflect recognition. I have learned that in this truly, difficult world we all offer wisdom, experience, knowledge and support. ..and that, no matter your position, stay true to your values and your beliefs. Bring on the next chapter.

REFLECTING ON THE OVERWHELMING response to the launch of the Journal of Nursing Science and Professional Practice (JNSPP), Journal of Nursing Science and Professional Practice (lww.com), I'm left pondering: What are we missing? The flood of engagement from diverse corners of the globe underscores the untapped potential in nursing and healthcare. Could there be a treasure trove of unpublished, game-changing research waiting to be unlocked?“WHAT HAVE WE GONE AND DONE?” a member of the team asked me in the days following the launch. While the team and I anticipated the launch would garner excitement and support and curiosity, I must confess that personally, I was caught a bit off-guard. In general, I know nursing to be a collaborative and supportive profession. But, where did all of these researchers and academics and practitioners and healthcare workers come from? THE REPORTED BARRIERS FACED BY new researchers, and those outside North America and Europe, raise important questions about inclusivity in scientific publishing. Are we truly harnessing diverse perspectives and knowledge sources to advance universal healthcare? Could a journal showcasing the best of nursing from around the world make a tangible difference?ADMITTEDLY, I AM A NOVICE editor. I am neither academician nor researcher. I am not familiar with all of the issues and I certainly do not have all the answers. Yet, the global collaboration witnessed during the Covid crisis reminds me of our collective strength. By embracing diverse voices and experiences, we can surely move closer to achieving universal healthcare. Let's use the JNSPP to continue to engage all talents in this crucial endeavour. What are your thoughts?

🐊 𝐇𝐔𝐓 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 🎓👋 Meet, Jennifer Renovato who’s in the HUT AVID AND PCT class. Read more below on how HUT has impacted Jennifer so far! 👇What are your post-high school plans?“My post-high school plans consists of working in my current job to later work as a pediatric PCT, and attend a university to fulfill my dream of being a PICU nurse.”What was your favorite memory in HUT Phase 1? Why?“My favorite memory in HUT Phase 1 was having the opportunity to go to “Dress for Success Houston” and with the empowering feeling it gave me, it also gave me the deep remembrance and deep realization that I can do anything in life; majorly invest in my own personal and educational dreams, strive for more and be happily successful.”What was the most valuable skill you learned while in HUT Phase 1? Why?“The most valuable skill I learned in HUT Phase 1 was self-advocacy. It has led me to many benefits, especially getting out of my comfort zone for many good things. “What advice would you give incoming HUTs?“Advice I would give to incoming HUTs is to be patient and persistent in any task in life. It will lead to unbelievable good results. In addition to this, use adversity as an opportunity because every adversity leads to new possibilities and you never know what you will get to encounter and experience. HUT can change your mindset for a successful future that you deserve, but it all depends on you.”Who was your favorite speaker and why?“My favorite speaker was Mark Edwards from Texas EquuSearch because first of his personality; a very humble person and his comic side. Also in how he loves helping the community and what he does, bringing hope to many families under distressing situations. “Congratulations, Jennifer! 👏Tracy Simmons

Have you heard of the Doorman Fallacy by Roth Sunderland? According to Roth, “The doorman fallacy is when you walk into a five-star hotel and you define the function of the doorman as opening and closing the door, you determine that can be replaced by an automatic mechanism.”The fallacy was trying to state clearly that the doorman did more than just open doors. They built relationships with the regulars and knew what each customer wanted. The relationships built, and the gossip 😹 all helped with customer retention. In Nigeria, people who fix eyelashes, do nail painting, and even do hairdressing are famous for theirs banters, jokes, and gossip, and customers enjoy this experience. Of course, automated doors (robots) cost lesser. But can they truly take the place of humans? Especially those types of deep experiences? But I feel like these are the sort of decisions organizations would likely face moving forward. I'm really curious to see how organizations would handle this in the next couple of months or years🤔

I look forward to participating on a panel at the Intelligent Health Association’s 2023 International Summit, along with Vikrant Arora and Brad Marsh BSN, RN, CEN, moderated by the esteemed David Finn. The age of AI in healthcare means the opportunity to enhance efficiency, improve patient outcomes, and transform how health services are delivered. Adoption is through diagnostic support, predictive analytics, virtual assistants, administrative efficiency, remote patient monitoring, drug discovery, education development, and, last but not least, strengthening cybersecurity. The ethics of AI in healthcare is concerned with patient privacy, data security, and bias in algorithms. Additionally, the rapid development and deployment of AI technologies may outpace the regulatory frameworks, creating a challenge to ensure the use of AI meets established safety and efficacy standards. What is the balance between innovation and regulation? For a cybersecurity professional, the challenges include the acquisition of AI security expertise, ensuring all data is encrypted and protected, access controls and authentication to the system that leverage AI, including heightened security through a layered approach, and continuous monitoring, Compliance with healthcare regulation (HIPAA), and gaining a deep understanding of how AI models and algorithms include security protection for the data.Register here: https://lnkd.in/e_mzsG7E#healthcare #healthcareinnovation #healthcareai #healthcarecybersecurity #StJoesephsHealth
